Digital processes for a masterpiece of Antique architecture

Dedicated to the patron goddess of Athens, Athena, the world-famous Parthenon temple sits atop the hill of the Acropolis and has been a landmark of the Greek capital for around 2,500 years. However, this masterpiece of Antiquity conceals a host of optical illusions. Its builders used a range of tricks to make the temple look perfect from the outside: no right angles, a curved floor, inclined columns, differing spacings. However, this recently made erecting scaffolding at the edifice in readiness for renovation work into something of a challenge for the scaffolding constructors. To overcome these problems, they decided to use the versatile Allround Scaffolding, coupled with digital work steps based on the Layher SIM process throughout the entire project. This meant moving from the reality into digital planning – and then back again.

  • A 3D-laserscan delivered a survey of the current situation on site that was accurate to the nearest millimetre and served as the basis for planning.
  • Highly accurate preliminary 3D planning with LayPLAN CAD made it possible to adapt the scaffolding precisely to the historic building, permitted close coordination with the customer and the other professionals who would subsequently intervene at the structure, and allowed a check for potential conflicts prior to the start of assembly
  • Generation of reliable material lists at the touch of a button with LayPLAN MATERIALMANAGER, meaning that the right quantities of the required material were available on the building site exactly when they were needed.
  • Simple, precise laying-out of the scaffolding structure with SIM2Field using a total station
  • Digital support based on a digital twin during further assembly of the scaffolding thanks to the SIM2Field XR app
  • The versatile Allround Scaffolding with lightweight technology ensured cost-effective assembly and made it easier to adapt the scaffolding to the precise building geometry and site requirements

A preliminary 3D laser scan was performed in order to produce a reliable basis for planning.

Planning and work preparation were underpinned by the LayPLAN SUITE integrated software solution: precise 3D planning with LayPLAN CAD, generation of reliable material lists using LayPLAN MATERIALMANAGER.
