With a total capacity of around 70,000 spectators, the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban is the second-largest football stadium to have been newly built for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The architectural highlight is the steel arch, standing over 100 metres high, which spans the stadium and splits into two connected arches at its highest point. According to reports, this design references both the national flag and the symbolism of a united nation. It was precisely this arch that now needed to be refurbished. This was made possible by the beam solutions Allround FW System and TwixBeam, in combination with the flexible Allround Scaffolding. Using these, the scaffolders created a suspended scaffolding solution optimally adapted to the shape of the arch. An interesting detail: the arch sways due to the high wind loads. The scaffolding does not.
- Detailed advance planning in 3D by Layher’s applications engineers using LayPLAN CAD, plus close consultation using the digital twin of the scaffolding
- Erection of a supporting scaffold on the arch with a cantilevered section using the high-load-bearing Allround FW System
- Suspension of working scaffolds from the Allround FW System right and left of the arch using the Aluminium TwixBeam. The Allround Standard LW can easily be passed through and can also be used for suspended scaffolding thanks to the innovative integrally cast spigot
The beam solutions Allround FW System and TwixBeam enabled the creation of a suspended scaffold from the Allround System LW, which was perfectly adapted to the shape of the arch.
